Increase Gains in Nutrition by Integration, Education, Evaluation, Empowerment (IGNIT3)

Increase Gains in Nutrition by Integration, Education, Evaluation, Empowerment (IGNIT3) is a sustainable capacity-building project that was launched in Ghana with support from the Ghana Health Service and Ministry of Health on December 7, 2023.

In Ghana, IGNTI3 project collaborators are The Centre for Global Child Health at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), WaterAid, and the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives. With funding from the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada, IGNIT3 aims to improve nutrition for women, adolescent girls, and children over a span of five years (2023 to 2028) through targeted, integrated nutrition, health, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programming. Over $4 million Cdn of IGNIT3 funding is allocated to Ghana to support programming which is expected to impact more than 30,000 people including health workers, women, children, and adolescent girls.

Key Project Objectives

Through capacity-building activities, IGNIT3 will have national reach in Ghana alongside targeted interventions implemented in the Upper West and Greater Accra regions and other key regions.  Activities that will be undertaken include:

  1. Accredited online and in-person training modules and education programs for various cadres of health workers, including clinical officers, dieticians, nurses, midwives, and community health workers, in high-burden communities.
  2. Infrastructure investments in key health facilities (i.e. WASH and breast-feeding corners) and at the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives to support the roll-out and adoption of the proposed programming.
  3. Targeted research and evaluation to assess how integrating specific health, WASH, and nutrition interventions can result in improved outcomes for marginalized communities and contribute to the global evidence base.
