Dr. Mrs. Gloria Achempim-Ansong Inaugurated as 3rd Rector of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives

The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM) has officially inaugurated Dr. Gloria Achempim-Ansong as its 3rd Rector in a grand ceremony that also saw the Induction of 24 new Members and 572 Associate Members into the College. The two-day event, held at the University of Ghana Business School’s R.S. Amegashie Auditorium, brought together key stakeholders in the health sector, including Policymakers, Academia, and Professional Bodies, to witness this historic milestone.

The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, was the invited guest and played a pivotal role in the ceremony. He officially swore in Dr. Achempim-Ansong as the new Rector and administered the oath of secrecy, marking the formal commencement of her tenure.

In her inaugural address, Dr. Achempim-Ansong expressed her profound gratitude and humility for the trust placed in her to lead the institution. She acknowledged the foundation laid by her predecessors and pledged to build upon GCNM’s legacy of excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Education.

“This moment is not just a personal milestone but a testament to the collective trust and confidence placed in me to lead this esteemed institution. I am deeply honoured to serve and to contribute to the advancement of Nursing and Midwifery Education in Ghana and beyond,” she stated.

Dr. Achempim-Ansong, a Registered Nurse with over 28 years of experience, has worked in various Healthcare and Academic Institutions, including the Regional Hospital in Koforidua, Mamprobi Polyclinic, and the Nurses’ Training College at Pantang. She is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Adult Health Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana. A renowned Nurse Educator and Researcher, she has expertise in Non-Communicable Diseases, Adult Health, Nursing Education, and Health Systems Research.

Outlining her vision for the College, she emphasized the need to enhance Education and Training, promote Research and Innovation, strengthen Leadership Development, deepen Community Engagement, and position GCNM as a Global Leader in Nursing and Midwifery Education.

“We will enhance our curricula to ensure our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for high-quality patient-centred care. We will foster a strong research culture and leverage global partnerships to strengthen our institution’s impact on healthcare,” she added.

Dr. Achempim-Ansong holds a PhD in Nursing from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with Psychology from the University of Ghana. She is a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Nurses and Midwives, a Foundation Fellow of GCNM, and Vice President of the Ghana Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). She previously served as the Faculty Chair for Emergency Nursing (2015-2019), Vice President of the Nursing Division (2020-2024), and a Member of the Governing Council of GCNM (2022-2024).

Beyond Academia, she has contributed immensely to Nursing and Midwifery through extensive Research Publications in reputable International Journals, particularly in areas such as Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes, Hypertension, and Nursing Education. She has reviewed articles for five peer-reviewed journals and presented at numerous International and Local Conferences.

The event also marked the Induction of new Members and Associate Members into the College, further strengthening GCNM’s commitment to advancing the professional growth of Nurses and Midwives in Ghana. The newly inaugurated Rector called on all stakeholders to support her vision, emphasizing collaboration as key to achieving the College’s strategic objectives.

“Achieving this vision will require the collective effort of Faculty, Staff, Residents, Healthcare Institutions, Policymakers, and the broader Community. Together, we can build a College that continues to lead in Excellence, Innovation, and Leadership in Healthcare,” she affirmed.

Her leadership is expected to usher in a new era of transformation and growth for the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, reinforcing its role in shaping the future of specialist nursing and midwifery education in Ghana and beyond.
