The Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives warmly welcomes Mrs. Christiana Okantey as the newly appointed Vice Rector (Nursing). With over two decades of experience in nursing practice and lecturing, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the College.
Mrs. Okantey’s professional background includes academic and clinical roles in a number of reputable institutions. She has worked at the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoNM), University of Cape Coast (UCC), the Nursing and Midwifery Training College (NMTC), Korle-Bu and Nurses’ Training College (NTC), Pantang, among others. She worked at the Genito-Urinary (GU) ward of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital before getting into nursing education. Her experience spans teaching, curriculum development, clinical nursing practice, and administration.
Mrs. Okantey has occupied various positions and served various roles in all the institutions she has worked with. At the SoNM, UCC, she served as the Coordinator for the Department of Adult Health for 2 terms, as the Sandwich Coordinator for many years, the Clinical Coordinator and the Department Registration and Examinations Officer among others. She has been an assessor for many professional bodies to date. She has chaired and been a member of numerous committees. At UCC, she was the chairperson for the Licensure Committee for many years, chaired the Clinical Committee and was a member of the Research, Curriculum, Dean’s Awards committees among several others. She was the Faculty Chairperson for Haematology at the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives for 2 terms and served on a number of committees as well. These demonstrate her commitment to advancing nursing education, research and practice.
Her areas of expertise include adult health nursing (especially care of clients with chronic conditions), curriculum development, culture care nursing, nursing education and clinical instruction at both basic and advanced levels.
Mrs. Okantey has a number of publications to her credit. Some of her publications in 2024 include:
- Self-management needs, strategies and support for individuals with sickle cell disease in developing countries: a scoping review, BMJ Open 2024.
- Self-management interventions for gestational diabetes in Africa: a scoping review, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth.
- Sexting among College Students in Africa: A Scoping Review of Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Impact, Sexes 2024.
- Frequency of internet use and hypertension risk among men and women in Kenya: an analysis of the 2022 demographic and health Survey, BMC Digital Health.
Her commitment to the nursing profession is further endorsed by her fellowships and memberships with prominent professional associations such as the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM), West African Post Graduate College of Nurses and Midwives, the American Diabetes Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International (Chi Omicron).
The appointment of Mrs. Christiana Okantey as the Second Vice Rector strengthens the leadership team at the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives. Together with the Rector and the Vice Rector (Mental Health, Midwifery and Public Health), the team is well positioned to advance the College’s mandate of promoting excellence in post-graduate nursing and midwifery education and practice in Ghana.
