Health Minister Inaugurates the Governing Council of GCNM

A 13-member Governing Council of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives has been inaugurated in Accra. The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, noted that, in recent times, a lot of nurses and midwives are migrating legally outside Ghana to seek for greener pastures and as such his outfit has put together a programme to facilitate and streamline this move. The Ministry is finalizing bilateral agreement with UK on this. Similar arrangements have been done with Barbados.

The Minister appreciated the College for its contribution to the training of specialist nurses and midwives though the College had existed for only 10 years. He charged the Governing Council to work at addressing the challenges of the College, identify new partners, raise funds and increase its impact in specialist training not only for Ghana, but for the sub region and Africa as a whole. The minister also administered the oaths of office and secrecy to the Governing Council.

The Chairman of the Board, George Abankwah-Yeboah expressed his appreciation to the President and the Minister for the confidence and opportunity to serve on the Governing Council. He pledged to work with the members of the Council and management of GCNM to contribute to training more specialists nurses and midwives to support government’s initiatives and programmes aimed at providing quality healthcare.
